Guss! Guss! Guss!
Brandi and I added another island to the list of Around the San Juans. Our mission: Guss Island. Guss is just outside of English Camp in Garrison Bay, and is reportedly named after a storekeeper at the camp.
We had a great paddle, and the weather & conditions were classic PNW “Not too anything”. Little bit of an ebb through Mosquito Bay is all, which was nice on the way back. For me, it was three things I love: paddling, the San Juans, and doing so with Brandi.
Trip Note: we launched from Snug Harbor, and they’re currently undergoing construction of new cabins — which are beautiful, BTW. However the construction zone impacts the driveway down to the dock & boat launch. We launched early in the morning and there weren’t any cones up (blocking the driveway), but upon our return we were informed that private kayakers (like us) would have to park and launch from somewhere else (long-term, not just during construction). Commercial kayak tour companies do continue to operate out of Snug.
